June baseball is officially here, and the Cancun race has never been tighter.
The elite contenders continue separating themselves from the pack, while several former favorites have ruined their Cancun dreams by accidentally playing competent baseball. Others have gone all-in on the mission, embracing losing streaks, bullpen disasters, injuries, organizational chaos, and public humiliation.
As always, the formula remains simple: The worse your season, the better your Cancun chances.
Top 10 — Cancun Championship Favorites
1. North Japan Samurai (112–0, NPB)
The defending Cancun champions improved to 112–0, and somehow Tony Ohtani found time for yet another accomplishment: graduating from Harvard Medical School this week. It's just one more thing Tony has done that Shohei never did.
Meanwhile, the power surge continues throughout the organization. Eric Sim, Lil' Moto, and Ippei Mizuhara all enter the week carrying 7-game home run streaks, which feels completely normal by North Japan standards. The Samurai continue operating several levels above the rest of baseball.
2. South Japan Samurai (99–9, NPB)
South Japan remains firmly entrenched at No. 2 after another dominant week. The biggest story came when Joey Ohtani called his shot before a game and then proceeded to hit a ball completely through the South Japan Dome roof.
That's an accomplishment even Tony Ohtani hasn't pulled off. Tony has famously broken numerous roofs throughout North Japan and the Cancun Dome over the years, but he's never publicly predicted it beforehand. Joey's combination of talent and confidence continues fueling speculation that he may someday challenge both of his brothers.
3. Chicago Cubs (34–32)
The Cubs remain one of baseball's premier Cancun organizations. Not only have they failed to win a series in over a year, but Alex Bregman has stranded so many runners on base that he reportedly set a new MLB record with 1,400 runners left on base this season.
As if that wasn't enough, the Cubs were obliterated 188–3 by the Giants on Friday, and ownership followed it up by announcing plans to relocate the franchise to Kenosha, Wisconsin, where they'll build a new stadium. Peak Cancuning.
4. Los Angeles Angels (25–42)
The Angels continue climbing after another difficult week, and they somehow keep finding new ways to embarrass themselves.
Last week brought perhaps the most Angels moment imaginable when a fly ball off the bat of TJ Rumfield bounced off Jo Adell's head and over the wall at Angel Stadium for a home run. The following day, the club unveiled its new City Connect uniforms, which are identical to their normal uniforms except every player now wears a bicycle helmet instead of a baseball cap.
No organization understands the Cancun lifestyle better.
5. Portland Pickles (0–0, West Coast League)
The Pickles continue their meteoric rise despite remaining undefeated and technically not having played meaningful baseball. Scouts remain convinced that Dillon T. Pickle is baseball's ultimate secret weapon, and momentum around the organization continues growing every week.
6. San Diego Padres (34–31)
Biggest risers of the week. The Padres rocket up the rankings after losing 2 of 3 games at home to the New York Mest over the weekend, showing signs of life after losing Francisco Tatis Jr. for the season.
Earlier in the week, the Padres did manage to snap Cristopher Sanchez's scoreless innings streak, ending it at 50 2/3 innings, but true to Cancun form they still found a way to lose the game 3–2. That's the type of commitment voters reward.
7. Colorado Rockies (24–42)
The Rockies jump four spots after another brutal week. At 24–42, they continue building one of the strongest Cancun résumés in baseball. Every time it feels like they've hit rock bottom, they somehow find another level.
8. Kansas City Royals (27–39)
The Royals continue climbing after another week spent buried in the AL Central standings. The offense remains inconsistent, the pitching remains unreliable, and the overall trajectory remains perfectly aligned with Cancun.
9. Houston Astros (31–37)
The Astros remain firmly inside the top 10 despite another uneven week. The injuries continue piling up, the standings remain ugly, and consistency remains elusive.
The lone bright spot came when Lizzy Dunne liked Cam Smith's Instagram post following his huge game against the Pirates and Dunne's ex-boyfriend Paul Skenes. Astros fans immediately declared it the biggest win of the season.
10. New York Mest (29–36)
The Mest remain firmly entrenched in the top 10 and recently strengthened their Cancun credentials even further by signing OF Nick Castellanos, fresh off his release from the Padres.
Even better, Castellanos also serves as an official Fax Lite ambassador, making him a perfect fit for the organization. Adding Castellanos to a roster already loaded with Cancun talent practically guarantees the Mest will remain contenders throughout the summer.
The Rest of the Field
11. Boston Red Sox (27–37)
The Chad Sox narrowly miss the top 10. Boston continues hovering around the edge of relevance, but a lack of true organizational catastrophe keeps them just outside the elite tier.
12. Long Island Ducks (25-17)
The Ducks remain one of the strongest non-MLB contenders. Trevor Bauer's continued success remains a major obstacle to higher Cancun placement.
13. Miami Marlins (31–35)
The Marlins continue hanging around the conversation but have cooled off slightly after last week's big jump.
14. Minnesota Twins (30–37)
Still stuck in baseball purgatory. Bad enough to matter, not bad enough to dominate.
15. Detroit Tigers (27–39)
The Tigers have stabilized slightly after weeks near the top, which ironically hurts their Cancun positioning.
16. San Francisco Giants (27–40)
The Giants remain one of baseball's most disappointing teams, but others have simply passed them in the rankings.
17. Baltimore Orioles (31–36)
Another frustratingly average week keeps Baltimore in the middle of the pack.
18. TBD Athletics (31–35)
The Athletics continue floating around .500 territory, which remains terrible for Cancun credibility. Losing their first game in Las Vegas doesn't help, either.
19. Cincinnati Reds (31–34)
A disappointing season continues. Not enough winning to matter, not enough losing to dominate.
20. Toronto Blue Jays (32–35)
Toronto remains trapped in the middle. The standings suggest mediocrity and the rankings agree.
21. Texas Rangers (32–33)
The Rangers have quietly drifted downward after stabilizing following last month's no-hit embarrassment.
22. Washington Nationals (34–33)
Exactly .500. Exactly mediocre. Exactly where Cancun contenders don't want to be.
23. Pittsburgh Pirates (34–32)
Still winning too many games.
24. Chicago White Sox (34–31)
The White Sox continue disappointing Cancun supporters by remaining surprisingly competitive. The absence of Munetaka Murakami hasn't been enough to completely derail them.
25. Arizona Diamondbacks (34–31)
Far too functional to be considered serious Cancun threats.
26. St. Louis Cardinals (35–28)
Another week of competent baseball pushes them further from contention.
27. Philadelphia Phillies (36–30)
The Don Mattingly turnaround continues ruining one of the best Cancun stories of the early season.
28. Seattle Mariners (35–32)
The Mariners continue damaging their Cancun credentials by staying atop the AL West.
29. Cleveland Guardians (37–31)
First place in the AL Central remains one of the biggest anti-Cancun accomplishments in baseball.
30. New York Yankees (39–26)
The Yankees continue refusing to commit to the cause. Too many wins. Too much talent.
31. Tampa Bay Rays (38–25)
The Rays finally showed signs of regression with a 3–7 stretch, but they're still far too successful.
32. Milwaukee Brewers (41–23)
Leading the NL Central remains devastating for Cancun hopes.
33. Los Angeles Dodgers (42–24)
The Dodgers continue winning baseball games and making Cancun voters angry.
34. Atlanta Braves (45–21)
Dead last once again. Best team in baseball. Zero Cancun credibility. Wheelchair Wonder continues leading a machine that refuses to lose enough games to matter.
Final Thoughts
The field continues tightening behind the two Japanese powerhouses. North Japan and South Japan appear destined for an eventual showdown, while the Cubs, Angels, Padres, Rockies, Royals, Astros, and Mest continue battling for MLB supremacy.
Meanwhile, the Braves, Dodgers, Brewers, Rays, Yankees, and Guardians continue sabotaging their own Cancun dreams through reckless winning.
Who belongs in the top five? Who's overrated? And which contender is one losing streak away from making a serious Cancun title run?
