CANCÚN — Day 5 of the 2026 Cancun World Classic delivered one of the biggest upsets of the tournament, a dramatic clinching victory for Team Texas, and perhaps the wildest finish yet inside the Cancun Dome.
China shocked previously unbeaten Russia behind a historic pitching performance, Texas survived a furious Cuban rally to advance to the knockout round, and the Fax Islands pulled off a jaw-dropping walk-off comeback to advance as well, thanks to Frank the Tank.
The tournament’s group stage continues to produce unpredictable chaos as the race to the Cancun World Classic quarterfinals heats up.

China 1, Russia 0 (Pool A)
In one of the most stunning results of the tournament so far, China shut out powerhouse Russia thanks to a flawless performance from Yao Ming.
The game’s only run came in the first inning, when Anthony Volpe launched a solo home run to give China a 1–0 lead.
That was all the offense China would need.
From there, Yao Ming took over.
The towering right-hander dominated Russia’s lineup from the first pitch, retiring every batter he faced and completing a perfect game, one of the most historic pitching performances in Cancun World Classic history.
“He was unhittable,” Volpe said after the game. “When Yao’s throwing strikes from that release point, the ball feels like it’s coming from the sky.”
Russia threatened several times early but could never break through.
After the final out, Yao raised both arms to the crowd as the Chinese dugout rushed the field in celebration.
“It was a dream,” Yao said calmly after the game. “We knew Russia was a great team, but tonight we believed.”
Russia falls to 2–1 in Pool A, while China earns its first victory and improves to 1–2.

Texas 12, Cuba 9 (Pool A)
Team Texas officially punched its ticket to the Cancun World Classic Quarterfinals after surviving a chaotic slugfest with Cuba.
Texas struck first in the fourth inning, when Jose Altuve crushed a three-run home run shortly after several loud trash cans were heard banging in the Texas dugout, giving Texas a 3–0 lead.
“Just great teamwork in the dugout,” Altuve joked afterward. “Everyone was really locked in.”
Texas built a large lead throughout the middle innings, but Cuba stormed back dramatically in the seventh inning.
With the bases loaded, Bad Bunny ripped an inside-the-park grand slam, electrifying the crowd and pulling Cuba within striking distance.
“I was just running,” Bad Bunny said. “Once I saw the ball roll past the outfielder, I wasn’t stopping.”
The comeback attempt nearly continued in the ninth.
With the bases loaded and two outs, Adolis García stepped to the plate representing the tying run.
Texas turned to Anthony Banda, who delivered the game’s most critical moment by striking García out to seal the 12–9 victory.
“We knew it wasn’t going to be easy,” Banda said. “That lineup can mash.”
Texas improves to 3–0 in Pool A and became the third team in the tournament to clinch a quarterfinal spot.
Cuba falls to 1–3.

Fax Islands 8, Greenland 7 (Pool D)
The most chaotic game of Day 5 came between Fax Islands and Greenland, a matchup that featured a dramatic comeback, an ejection, an on-field distraction, and a legendary walk-off.
Greenland struck first in the second inning, when Javy Báez crushed a three-run home run to give Greenland an early 3–0 lead.
The game’s tone shifted moments later when Fax Islands starting pitcher Hawk Tuah was ejected from the game for alleged illegal crypto coin activity in Cancun, forcing the Fax Islands bullpen to cover most of the game.
“We’re still figuring out exactly what happened,” Fax Islands manager Dusty Baker said afterward. “But apparently the league doesn’t like blockchain in the bullpen.”
Things got even stranger in the outfield.
At one point during the middle innings, Fax Islands star Juan Soda committed a costly defensive error after being caught counting cash while receiving a pedicure in left field, allowing Greenland to extend their lead.
Despite the chaos, Fax Islands kept the game close.
Trailing late in the ninth inning, Frank the Tank stepped to the plate with everything on the line.
On the first pitch he saw, Frank crushed a towering Golden Taco home run worth seven runs, instantly flipping the scoreboard and giving Fax Islands an 8–7 walk-off victory.
The crowd erupted as Frank rounded the bases while teammates poured out of the dugout.
“I was just looking for something over the plate,” Frank said after the game. “When I saw the Golden Taco hanging out there, I knew it was my moment.”
The win sends Fax Islands to 3–0, clinching a spot in the Cancun World Classic Quarterfinals, while Greenland drops to 2–1.
