CANCÚN — After five days of chaos, comebacks, record-breaking performances, and at least one crypto scandal, the 2026 Cancun World Classic is officially heading to the knockout stage.
Eight teams remain. One will leave Cancun with the Golden Taco Trophy.
The quarterfinal round begins March 13 inside the Cancun Dome, and the bracket is already loaded with storylines — including the sudden arrival of Team Mexico, the continued dominance of North Japan, and lingering questions surrounding the availability of Fax Islands closer Hawk Tuah, who is currently awaiting trial in Cancun following her arrest during group play.
The road to the championship now runs through four high-stakes matchups.
Quarterfinal Matchups

Mexico vs. Fax Islands
March 13 — 6:30 PM (FAX+)
Perhaps the strangest storyline of the tournament belongs to Team Mexico, which wasn’t even supposed to be in the bracket.
Mexico was inserted into the quarterfinals after Armenia lost insurance coverage for its players following the bizarre Anthony Rendonian injury incident, in which the Armenian star reportedly fractured his back arguing balls and strikes during group play.
With Armenia forced to withdraw, Mexico was called in as a replacement team despite being eliminated earlier from what players jokingly refer to as “the fake world classic.”
Now they suddenly find themselves in Cancun with a shot at the title.
Mexico’s lineup still packs plenty of star power:
RF Jarren Duran
LF Randy Arozarena
1B Jonathan Aranda
C Alejandro Kirk
DH Rowdy Tellez
3B Nacho Alvarez Jr.
2B Nick Gonzales
CF Alek Thomas
SS Joey Ortiz
Mexico manager Benji Gil said the team is embracing the opportunity.
“Look, we weren’t planning on being here this week,” Gil said. “But if someone invites you to Cancun to play baseball, you show up.”
Standing in their way is the undefeated Fax Islands, who cruised through Pool D with a 4–0 record.
The Fax Islands lineup features a dangerous core:
RF Ronald “Wheelchair Wonder” Acuña Jr.
CF Josh Reddick
LF Juan Soda
1B Marc Olsen
3B Frank Fleming
2B Chazz Jizzums
DH Joc Pederson
SS Carl Ripken Jr.
C Martin Maldonado
Captain Marc Olsen believes his team is ready for the moment:
“Freddie never made it this far in Cancun. He's never even been to Cancun. I hope he's watching. Can someone upgrade his Roku and help him download FAX Plus?”
Fax Islands ace Justin Verlander will take the mound against José Urquidy for Mexico.

Texas vs. Greece
March 13 — 8:00 PM (FAX+)
Two undefeated teams nearly collided earlier in the tournament, but the bracket now sets up one of the most anticipated matchups of the quarterfinals.
Texas (3–1) vs Greece (4–0).
Texas enters the game behind the leadership of manager George W. Bush, who has guided the team through a powerful lineup led by:
2B José Altuve
CF Trent Grisham
LF Travis Scott
SS Bobby Witt Jr.
1B Max Muncy
3B Josh Jung
RF Hunter Pence
DH Matthew Stafford
C Jose Trevino
Clayton Kershaw will start the quarterfinal.
“This is why you play the tournament,” Kershaw said. “You want the ball in a game like this.”
Greece has been one of the tournament’s most explosive teams, powered by a lineup featuring:
CF Alexi Markakopoulos
RF Nick Markakis
1B Nick Castellanos
DH Giannis Antetokounmpo
3B Mike Moustakas
LF Nikolaos Troutakis
2B Christos Vasilakakis
C Yan Gomes
SS Spiro Karamanis
Antetokounmpo will start on the mound for Greece while also remaining one of their most dangerous hitters.
Greece manager John Stamos said his team is ready for the spotlight.
“We’ve got power, pitching, and great hair,” Stamos said. “That’s a dangerous combination.”

Greenland vs. North Japan
March 14 — 3:00 PM (FAX+)
This matchup might feature the most dominant team in tournament history.
North Japan (4–0) enters the quarterfinals after one of the most absurd group stage performances ever recorded.
The defending champions scored 667 runs in four games and did not allow a single run.
There isn't a weak spot in manager Ichiro Suzuki's lineup:
DH Tony Ohtani
RF Ippei Mizuhara
CF Yasiel Puig
C Eric Sim
SS Lil' Moto
LF Seiya Suzuki
2B Clarc Olsen
3B Mini Moto
1B Yung Moto
Tony Ohtani, the best player in the world, says the team remains focused despite the dominance:

Tony Ohtani will also start on the mound.
Standing in their way is Greenland (3–1), a team that thrives on chaos.
Greenland’s lineup:
3B Javy Baez
SS Draymond Green
CF Cody Bellinger
DH Donald Trump
C Marjorie Taylor Greene
LF Riley Greene
RF Green Power Ranger
1B CeeLo Green
2B Tom Green
Player-manager Donald Trump says his team isn’t intimidated.
“Everyone says North Japan is unbeatable,” Trump said. “But we’ve got tremendous hitters. The best hitters. By far. And Cody Bellinger is hitting bombs. Not as deep as I am, but he's hitting them. Great guy, that Cody.”
Hunter Greene will start for Greenland.

Finland vs. Russia
March 14 — 9:00 PM (FAX+)
The final quarterfinal matchup features two teams with explosive offenses.
Finland (3–1) is led by the red-hot Mike Trout, who has been one of the tournament’s most dangerous hitters.
The rest of their lineup should not be taken lightly:
CF Mikko Laaksonen
2B Jari Niemela
1B Lauri Markkanen
RF Mike Trout
DH Sami Koskinen
LF Olli Makinen
3B Joonas Lehtonen
C Petri Salonen
SS Kari Saarijarvi
Starting pitcher Finn Wolfhard will take the mound.
Russia, which went 3-1 in Pool A, brings one of the deepest lineups in the tournament:
CF Victor Robles
2B Nicolai Hoerner
RF Nikola Jokic
1B Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
DH Alexander Ovechkin
C The Rizzler
LF Dmitri Young
3B Mikhail Franco
SS Ben Zobrist
Russia manager Vladimir Putin believes the team is peaking at the right time.
“We started slow,” Putin said. “But Russia is always strongest in the later rounds.”
Drew Rasmussen will start for Russia.
The Hawk Tuah Situation
One of the biggest unresolved storylines entering the quarterfinals involves Fax Islands closer Hawk Tuah, who was arrested mid-game earlier in the tournament for alleged involvement in a Cancun cryptocurrency scandal.
League officials confirmed Tuah remains in Cancun awaiting trial.
Her availability for the remainder of the tournament is uncertain.
Fax Islands manager Dusty Baker addressed the situation briefly.
“We’re letting the legal system handle it,” Baker said. “But if she gets out in time, we’d love to have her in the bullpen.”
The Road to the Golden Taco
The quarterfinal winners will advance to the semifinals on March 15–16, with the Cancun World Classic Championship scheduled for March 17.
The prize: the coveted Golden Taco Trophy.
With undefeated teams, surprise replacements, and off-field chaos already shaping the tournament, the quarterfinal round promises to deliver even more unforgettable moments.
And if the first week of the Cancun World Classic has proven anything, it’s this:
Anything can happen inside the Cancun Dome.
