SEATTLE — The Mariners are leaning all the way into their very brief time atop the AL West standings. According to @RyanDivish on Twitter, the team announced they’ll be giving away a “Tied for 1st Place for 1 Day in August” commemorative banner to the first 10,000 fans at their next home game on August 22nd against the A’s. The promotion celebrates the Mariners’ fleeting 24-hour tie with the Houston Astros earlier this week before losing to the Orioles and immediately slipping back into second.

Seattle Fan Reaction: “This Was Our Peak”

Mariners Twitter has reacted with a mix of pride and self-aware humor:

  • @TrueToTheBrew: “That tie was the highlight of my life. I’m framing mine.”

  • @FelixDayEveryDay: “Peak Mariners baseball. It’s all downhill from here.”

  • @SeaLevelSadness: “We may not have a ring, but we’ve got a waterproof banner for 2nd place energy.”

Players Seem… Confused

While fans are leaning into the joke, some Mariners players aren’t quite sure why this is happening.

  • Carl Raleigh: “Wait… this is for being tied? Not for winning something?”

  • Josh Naylor: “I guess… congratulations to us?”

  • Bryan Woo: “I thought this was a prank. We’re really doing this?”

Astros Players Amused

Predictably, Houston isn’t letting this slide.

  • Jose Altuve: “That’s cute. Little bro got a banner.”

  • Hunter Brown: “We celebrate division titles. They celebrate one day. It’s adorable.”

Mariners Legend to Sign Banners

The August 22nd game is already sold out, and fans lucky enough to snag a ticket can choose their waterproof banner in blue, teal, or gray. Even better, newly-inducted Hall of Famer Ichiro Suzuki will be on hand to sign autographs—though he didn’t exactly endorse the idea.

“It’s a stupid giveaway,” Ichiro admitted through a grin. “But they’re paying me too much to pass it up.”

Whether you see it as a tongue-in-cheek fan favorite or another chapter in Mariners heartbreak lore, August 22nd is shaping up to be one of the most uniquely Seattle giveaways in baseball history. And if nothing else, it’s waterproof—perfect for both Pacific Northwest rain and the salty tears of almost-success.
