The race to the 2026 Cancun Playoffs has officially entered a new phase. The contenders are no longer just losing — they’re embracing collapse as an organizational philosophy. Injuries, bullpen meltdowns, humiliating sweeps, fan outrage and clubhouse panic are all becoming major factors in this year’s rankings.
And this week, one historic franchise made the leap nobody saw coming.
Top 10 — Cancun Championship Favorites
1. North Japan Samurai (93–0, NPB)
Still perfect. Still terrifying. The Samurai improved to 93-0 this week, and insiders around NPB are openly wondering whether the team could finish the season undefeated. Tony Ohtani continues dominating on both sides of the ball, while Eric Sim reportedly homered in six consecutive games this week. At this point, North Japan isn’t just the favorite to win Cancun again — they may never lose another baseball game.
2. South Japan Samurai (76–7, NPB)
Up five spots and firmly entering the championship conversation. Joey Ohtani — the middle Ohtani brother — continues taking over NPB with his elite two-way play. Multiple scouts now believe Joey may already be better than Shohei, while a growing group of insiders think he could eventually challenge Tony Ohtani as the best player in the family. Skeptics still exist, but South Japan’s rise feels very real.
3. Detroit Tigers (21–33)
The Tigers continue surging after another disastrous week. Detroit carried a brutal six-game losing streak into Sunday before finally beating the Orioles, and the damage had already been done. After losing 8 of their last 10 games, the Tigers have now fallen into last place in the AL Central, sitting a staggering 10 games behind the first-place Guardians. Few organizations currently look more prepared for Cancun.
4. Chicago Cubs (29–25)
Biggest risers of the week. The Cubs skyrocketed 25 spots after extending their losing streak to 17 straight games, falling all the way to third place in the NL Central. Even more alarming: star outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong has reportedly struck out 10 times in his last 8 at-bats, still visibly rattled after his viral confrontation with a White Sox fan last week. The Cubs may have finally unlocked elite Cancun form.
5. Los Angeles Angels (20–34)
The Angels remain elite Cancun contenders despite slipping two spots. What’s most impressive is that the organization has stayed committed to the Cancun mission despite Mike Trout already slugging 13 home runs this season. Lesser franchises might have used that momentum to turn things around. The Angels refused.
6. Texas Rangers (24–29)
Second biggest risers of the week. The Rangers jumped 14 spots after being combined no-hit by the Astros yesterday in one of the most embarrassing losses of the MLB season. The defining moment came in the ninth inning, when Brandon Nimmo was called out on strikes to end the game, immediately asked for an ABS challenge, and was still proven wrong when the call was confirmed. Peak Mesting. Peak Cancun baseball. This team is ready.
7. Houston Astros (24–31)
The Astros slipped five spots despite remaining near the bottom of the AL West largely because they accidentally played competent baseball this week — including throwing a combined no-hitter against the Rangers on Sunday. That kind of performance is dangerous for Cancun positioning. Still, injuries to Jose Altuve and Carlos Correa continue hanging over the franchise, keeping Houston firmly in the conversation.
8. New York Mest (22–32)
The Mest dropped four spots after another frustratingly inconsistent week, but they remain firmly in the top 10 for several reasons. First: they are still dead last in the NL East, sitting 14 games behind the first-place Braves. Second: closer Devin Williams gave up a walkoff grand slam to the Marlins on Sunday, a clutch Cancun-preserving performance that may have saved their ranking entirely.
9. Baltimore Orioles (24–30)
The Orioles barely cracked the top 10 this week — and almost didn’t — largely because Colton Cowser delivered walkoff hits in back-to-back games Sunday and Monday. Dangerous winning baseball like that nearly pushed Baltimore out of contention altogether. Still, the overall pitching chaos keeps them barely hanging on.
10. Portland Pickles (0–0, West Coast League)
Still undefeated. Still terrifying. Scouts say Dillon T. Pickle launched a baseball over a nearby highway during batting practice this week. The Pickles remain one of the biggest wildcards in the entire Cancun field.
The Rest of the Field
11. Long Island Ducks (15–14, 4th place Atlantic League North Division)
The Ducks remain one of the most fascinating fringe contenders in baseball. However, the success of pitcher Trevor Bauer, who already tossed a no-hitter this season, is a huge reason why they failed to crack the top 10. Too much competence from the rotation has slightly damaged their Cancun credibility — for now.
12. Colorado Rockies (20–35)
Still one of the worst teams in baseball, but they’re almost becoming too predictable. Cancun voters are looking for chaos, not just losing.
13. Boston Red Sox (22–30)
The Chad Sox continue hovering near contention. Manager Chad Tracy remains committed to aggressive bullpen decisions and questionable lineup construction, both huge positives for Cancun hopes.
14. San Francisco Giants (22–32)
The Giants continue sliding after another mediocre week. Still bad, still relevant, but lacking the dramatic flair of the true contenders.
15. Kansas City Royals (22–32)
The Royals remain quietly effective Cancun climbers. The offense has completely stalled over the last two weeks.
16. Toronto Blue Jays (25–29)
Toronto keeps hanging around thanks largely to continued inconsistency from its stars. They’re not collapsing hard enough to rise higher, but they remain relevant.
17. Minnesota Twins (26–28)
Hovering around .500 is one of the worst things you can do for Cancun positioning.
18. Miami Marlins (26–29)
The Marlins continue existing in baseball purgatory — flawed, mediocre, but not quite disastrous enough.
19. Seattle Mariners (26–29)
Seattle remains trapped in the middle. A few more bullpen meltdowns could push them much higher.
20. Philadelphia Phillies (27–27)
The Phillies continue falling after their incredible Don Mattingly turnaround. Winning baseball games remains devastating for Cancun momentum.
21. Arizona Diamondbacks (29–24)
An 8–2 stretch completely wrecked their Cancun trajectory. Far too competent right now.
22. Pittsburgh Pirates (28–26)
Winning baseball games continues to hold them back.
23. Cincinnati Reds (28–25)
Another team drifting dangerously toward actual playoff contention.
24. Chicago White Sox (27–26)
The White Sox remain one of the biggest Cancun disappointments of the season. They simply refuse to fully collapse.
25. TBD Athletics (27–27)
Falling back to .500 helped slightly, but the Athletics still don’t feel like serious Cancun threats.
26. Washington Nationals (28–27)
The Nationals continue sabotaging themselves with competent baseball.
27. St. Louis Cardinals (29–23)
Still far too stable for serious Cancun consideration.
28. San Diego Padres (31–22)
The Padres remain frustratingly functional. Too much talent, too much pitching, too many wins.
29. Cleveland Guardians (32–24)
Leading the AL Central completely destroys their Cancun credibility.
30. Milwaukee Brewers (31–20)
A strong week keeps Milwaukee moving further away from the Cancun field.
31. New York Yankees (32–22)
The Yankees have stabilized after their Subway Series disaster. Unfortunately for Cancun fans, that means they’re drifting back toward competence.
32. Los Angeles Dodgers (34–20)
The Dodgers remain one of baseball’s least serious Cancun organizations. Winning consistently and dominating offensively continues to hurt their positioning badly.
33. Atlanta Braves (36–18)
The Braves actually rose a spot this week after losing just their second series of the entire season, dropping 2 of 3 games to the Nationals over the weekend. Unfortunately for Cancun fans, that still isn’t nearly enough losing to make them a serious threat. Too talented. Too functional. Too annoyingly good.
34. Tampa Bay Rays (34–17)
Still dead last. The Rays continue embarrassing themselves by playing fundamentally sound baseball every single week.
Final Thoughts
The Cancun hierarchy is changing fast. The Cubs have officially arrived. The Tigers look terrifying. South Japan’s rise is beginning to feel inevitable.
Meanwhile, the Rays, Dodgers, Braves and Brewers continue sabotaging their own Cancun dreams by winning games like actual contenders.
