SAN JUAN, PR - What started as a bizarre report linking Dodgers closer Edwin Diaz to cockfighting events in Puerto Rico somehow escalated even further Friday morning — and now the focus has completely shifted to Diaz’s inner circle.

Earlier today, a viral USA Today investigation alleged that Diaz had been connected to multiple cockfighting events on the island through social media posts, promotional appearances and local interviews. The report referenced photos and event advertisements that reportedly labeled the three-time All-Star as a “Puerto Rican Star and Cockfighter,” while also pointing to comments Diaz made earlier this year describing cockfighting as “a lifelong hobby.”

The story immediately exploded across baseball social media.

Fans debated whether MLB would investigate. Others questioned whether the league would discipline Diaz over the reports, especially considering cockfighting has been federally banned in Puerto Rico since 2019. Despite the backlash, no charges or MLB discipline were announced, and sources close to the situation initially suggested the Dodgers believed the controversy would fade quickly.

Instead, things somehow got worse.

According to a breaking report circulating Friday morning, Diaz’s interpreter, Ignacio “Ippei” Marrero, was arrested by federal authorities in Puerto Rico for alleged ties to an illegal cockfighting ring. Sources familiar with the investigation reportedly believe Marrero may have played a larger role in coordinating Diaz’s appearances and relationships within the cockfighting community on the island.

The arrest immediately shifted the narrative surrounding the story.

While investigators reportedly do not expect Diaz himself to face criminal charges at this time, the idea that someone directly within his camp was arrested has reignited questions surrounding how involved the Dodgers closer truly was.

Ignacio “Ippei” Marrero was reportedly the "mastermind" behind the Puerto Rico cockfighting ring, as far as we know.

The situation also sparked immediate comparisons to the Dodgers’ recent history involving interpreters taking the fall for superstar players. MLB fans instantly referenced Shohei Ohtani’s former interpreter Ippei Mizuhara, whose gambling scandal dominated baseball headlines and led to criminal charges in 2024 while Ohtani maintained he had no involvement.

Now, with another Dodgers star suddenly seeing his interpreter become the central figure in a federal investigation, social media has spent the entire day connecting dots — fair or not.

Even Ohtani himself reportedly weighed in briefly when approached by reporters outside Angel Stadium Friday afternoon.

“You cannot always trust interpreters,” Ohtani allegedly said through another interpreter. “Sometimes they say things or do things players do not fully understand. I think Edwin deserves fairness before assumptions are made.”

That quote immediately went viral online for obvious reasons.

Social media erupted within minutes of the report.

Some fans joked that the Dodgers now lead MLB in “interpreter-related controversies.” Others accused the internet of rushing to conclusions before all details are known. Meanwhile, rival fanbases spent most of the morning posting rooster memes, photoshopped Dodgers logos with chickens, and fake “farm system” jokes.

The Dodgers organization has not released an official statement.

MLB also has not publicly commented on the matter, though league officials are reportedly monitoring the situation closely due to the growing national attention surrounding the story. Several insiders around baseball believe the league office wants to avoid another massive off-field scandal dominating headlines during the season.

The strangest part of the situation may be how quickly public opinion shifted.

Just hours ago, much of the discourse centered around whether Diaz had simply participated in a controversial cultural tradition growing up in Puerto Rico. But after Marrero’s reported arrest, online speculation exploded into full conspiracy territory, with some fans now convinced there could be additional people connected to the alleged operation.

At the moment, however, no evidence has surfaced linking Diaz directly to criminal activity beyond the original USA Today report detailing his attendance and promotion of events.

Still, in typical baseball internet fashion, that hasn’t stopped the memes.

And if there’s one thing MLB fans have proven over the years, it’s that once a story involving a Dodgers interpreter goes viral, the internet is never going to let it go quietly.
