CANCUN - In a heart-pounding Game 3 of the Cancun Wild Card Series, the San Francisco Giants edged out the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-2, advancing to the NLDS amid the sweltering heat and vibrant energy of Cancun. The winner-take-all matchup, broadcast live on FAX+ and the FAX App, featured stellar pitching, monster home runs, and a finish that left fans buzzing. With the series tied 1-1 heading into Thursday's showdown, both teams brought their A-game, but it was the Giants' resilience that ultimately prevailed.
The Pirates struck first in the opening inning when second baseman Nick Gonzales delivered a clutch two-out RBI single, plating a run to give Pittsburgh an early 1-0 lead. Pirates starter Bubba Chandler, making his Cancun debut, looked sharp early on, escaping a bases-loaded jam in the third by striking out Giants slugger Rafael Devers with a nasty slutter. "That was a huge moment," Chandler said post-game. "Devers is a beast, but I trusted my stuff and got him looking. Felt like the whole beach was watching."
Giants ace Robbie Ray countered with fire, hitting 95 mph on a strikeout of Pirates catcher Joey Bart while unleashing a grunt measured at 95 decibels—setting new Cancun records for velocity and vocal intensity, per Statfax. "That grunt? It's my secret weapon," Ray quipped afterward. "Comes from deep in the soul, fueled by tacos and adrenaline. Broke the sound barrier out there." Despite Ray's dominance, the Giants offense struggled until the fourth, when outfielder Jerar Encarnacion launched a mammoth 442-foot homer to tie the game at 1-1. The blast, which nearly cleared the resort palm trees, electrified the crowd and shifted momentum.
Pittsburgh regained the lead in the fifth on a sacrifice fly from veteran Tommy Pham, making it 2-1. The score held through tense late innings, with both bullpens trading zeros. Heading into the ninth, the Pirates were one out away from victory, but Giants catcher Patrick Bailey had other plans. Bailey smoked a line drive to the gap that took a wild bounce off the outfield wall, turning into a chaotic inside-the-park home run as one runner scored ahead of him. The walk-off stunner sent the Giants dugout into frenzy and the Pirates packing for Galveston.
"It was pure chaos," Bailey reflected in the locker room, still catching his breath. "I hit it hard, saw it kick away, and just kept running. Felt like I was sprinting through quicksand, but hearing the crowd? Unreal. This one's for the fans back home—and the ones here with margaritas in hand." Pirates manager Derek Shelton, re-hired for Cancun, added, "Tough way to end, but credit to the Giants. That ball took a Cancun hop; what can you do?"
The Giants now advance to face the top-seeded Atlanta Braves in the NLDS, starting Saturday. For Pittsburgh, it's an offseason of what-ifs, but in Cancun, every game's a vacation—even the heartbreaks.
